Reading the terms the way a lawyer would

Before a bonus pays anything in cash, it has to survive five clauses, and four of them usually sit in a document most players never open. Compliance lawyers read for the clause that ends the argument. The same habit, applied for ten minutes before opting in, separates a $100 credit from $3,500 of required turnover that was never realistically going to convert.

The five clauses that decide the outcome

The wagering multiplier, expressed as a number times the bonus or times deposit plus bonus. The game weighting table, stating how much of each dollar wagered counts. The maximum bet permitted while any bonus is active. The expiry, covering both the offer and the wagering period. The maximum conversion, capping what bonus play can become in withdrawable cash.

Find those five before reading anything else. They frequently live in a general bonus policy rather than on the promotion page, and the general policy almost always says it prevails where the two conflict. Keep both. The promotional page is marketing; the policy is the contract.

The arithmetic, in dollars

A $100 bonus at 35x wagering requires $3,500 of qualifying turnover. On a slot returning 97 percent, expected loss across that turnover is roughly $105, which exceeds the bonus itself. On a 96 percent game the figure is about $140. That is not a trick played on anyone; it is what the multiplier means, and it is why the multiplier and the weighting table have to be read as a single calculation.

Multipliers applied to deposit plus bonus double the exposure. A $100 deposit matched with $100 at 40x on the combined figure is $8,000 of turnover, and at 97 percent the expected cost is around $240. Offers with genuinely low multipliers do exist. The number identifies them, not the headline.

Maximum bet clauses cause the most forfeitures

The typical cap is $5 per spin or hand, sometimes framed as 10 percent of the bonus amount, occasionally lower. It applies to every wager placed while a bonus balance is active, including autoplay sessions and including feature-buy purchases, where the price of the feature counts as the stake.

Breach is usually absolute. A single $12 spin inside a session of 800 compliant ones can void the bonus and everything derived from it, and the terms rarely oblige the operator to warn you or to block the bet. Where a balance is voided on this basis, ask for the specific wager, its timestamp and the clause number. A desk unable to produce all three has told you something.

Weighting is where turnover quietly disappears

Slots usually count at 100 percent. Roulette often counts at 10 percent or is excluded outright. Blackjack and video poker commonly count at 5 or 10 percent, because the lower house edge would otherwise tilt the arithmetic above toward the player. The consequence is arithmetic rather than opinion: $3,500 of required turnover at 10 percent weighting means $35,000 wagered on roulette.

Excluded games are worse than they appear. Depending on drafting, a wager on an excluded game can count as a breach rather than simply failing to contribute. Read whether the clause says the wager does not count toward wagering or that it is not permitted while a bonus is active. Those are different sentences with very different consequences.

The clauses that are about you, not the bonus

One account per person, household, IP address and device is standard, and it is enforced by device fingerprinting rather than good faith. Identity verification before a first withdrawal is close to universal, and it is far better completed on day one than on the day a payout is requested. Dormancy clauses permit monthly administration fees on accounts inactive for a stated period, often 12 months.

Amendment clauses allow the operator to change the terms on notice, which is why the version matters. Look also for the dispute clause: the address for formal complaints, the escalation route, and any deadline for raising a claim, which can be as short as 90 days from the event complained of.

Keep the version you agreed to

Save the terms as a dated PDF at the moment of opting in rather than afterwards. Where a dispute turns on wording, the operative document is the one published on the day of the wager, and operators do not reliably keep public archives of superseded versions. A file containing the dated terms, the promotional page and the opt-in confirmation email settles faster than a file containing an argument.

None of this alters the mathematics of the games themselves. The legal minimum age is 19 in Ontario and 18 or 19 elsewhere depending on the province, and ConnexOntario answers at 1-866-531-2600, free and confidential, 24 hours a day.

Questions

What does 35x wagering actually cost?

On a $100 bonus it means $3,500 of qualifying turnover before anything converts. Across that turnover, a slot returning 97 percent carries an expected loss near $105, and a 96 percent game near $140. The multiplier is therefore a price, not a hurdle, and comparing offers means comparing the turnover figure and the weighting table rather than the headline percentage.

Can one bet void an entire bonus?

Yes, under a maximum bet clause. Caps commonly sit at $5 per spin or hand, or at 10 percent of the bonus, and the terms usually make breach absolute rather than proportionate. One oversized wager can void the bonus and everything derived from it. Feature-buy purchases count as the stake, and autoplay does not excuse a breach.

Do table games count toward wagering requirements?

Partly, and sometimes not at all. Roulette frequently counts at 10 percent or is excluded, blackjack and video poker often at 5 or 10 percent. At 10 percent weighting, $3,500 of required turnover becomes $35,000 wagered. Check whether the clause says an excluded game fails to contribute or is prohibited outright, because the second version can forfeit the bonus.

Can the operator change the terms after I opt in?

Most terms include an amendment clause permitting changes on notice, and promotional pages are edited without announcement. That is why the version in force on the day of the wager is worth saving as a dated PDF. Where a dispute follows, the archived version plus the opt-in confirmation is the strongest document a player can put in front of a dispute resolution service.
